Key dates c. 1200 BCE: Lisbon's origins trace back to the Phoenician era, established as a small trading post, later evolving into a prosperous Roman city known as Olissipo. 8th-12th Century: During the Moorish invasion of the Iberian Peninsula, Lisbon becomes a thriving Moorish settlement, known as Al-Ushbuna. 1147: Lisbon Siege and the Reconquista by King Afonso I, setting a new era of Christianity in Portugal 15th-16th Century: The Age of Discoveries. Lisbon emerges as a crucial hub for navigators, cartographers, and shipbuilders, marking its golden age. November 1, 1755: Lisbon is devastated by a massive earthquake, followed by fires and a tsunami, killing up to 50,000 people. 1750-1777: Lisbon undergoes extensive rebuilding under the direction of the Marquis of Pombal. 1804-1815: Napoleonic Wars and the French Occupation 1908: Lisbon Regicide. The King and his heir were assassinated on the square of Praça do Comércio. It put an abrupt end to the monarchy within 2 years 1974: Carnation Revolution: The pacific revolution that took took the authoritative government “Estado Novo” and shaped the political landscape of the Portugal we know today
